Vision
The Maths department at Marlwood School encourages individual pupils to develop their own mathematical thinking and numerical competency with the aim that students can then interact more confidently in the mathematical and problem solving aspects of the world around them.

How to support your child
Discuss what they are doing in maths at the moment and explore key terminology.
Encourage them to make use of suggested websites.
Help them practice the spelling and use of mathematical vocabulary
Help/encourage them to prepare for the end of unit tests.

Mathematics GCSE
Exam Board: Edexcel
Exam weighting: 100%
Assessment:
- Two tiers of entry: Higher and Foundation
- Three equally weighted papers (1.5 hours duration) covering all aspects of the course
- ∙Paper 1 – Non-calculator; Paper 2 and 3 – Calculator allowed
Content: The course covers and assesses the following six areas of mathematics:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
- Geometry and Measures
- Probability
- Statistics
Skills: As part of the course, students will gain skills in the following areas:
- Problem solving
- Mathematical modelling
- Justifying and Explaining their choice of methods and answers
- Applying the Mathematics they already know to new and unusual situations
Enrichment:
- (National) Maths Challenge (UKMT) competitions
- Extension materials will be used in class to develop students’ thinking
